Select Board

The Select Board is the chief executive body of the Town of Marblehead under its open Town Meeting form of government. Typically consisting of five elected members, the board is entrusted with critical oversight, policy-setting, and governance responsibilities.

Authority & Responsibilities

  • Act as the Local Licensing Authority, issuing licenses and permits for alcohol, food, entertainment, lodging, and other regulated activities
  • Develop and propose the annual town budget and oversee fiscal planning
  • Set local policies, fees, permits, and regulations consistent with state law
  • Appoint key town officials and oversee appointed boards and commissions
  • Provide strategic direction for municipal services in collaboration with the Town Administrator

Election & Terms of Office

  • Marblehead transitioned from one-year to three-year staggered terms for Select Board members starting in 2024. Under this structure:
  • The top two vote-getters in 2024 received three-year terms
  • The next two received two-year terms
  • The fifth-place finisher received a one-year term
  • All seats become three-year terms going forward
  • This ensures continuity in governance and institutional memory moving forward.

Role Within Town Governance

Marblehead operates under a Select Board–Town Meeting structure. The Select Board acts as the executive branch of town government, while Town Meeting serves as the legislative body. The Town Administrator, appointed by the Board, manages the day-to-day operations of the town and oversees the implementation of Select Board policies.
