Contact the Firearms Licensing Unit by phone or email to schedule an appointment.
License Appointments:
Prior to scheduling, submit your application via the MIRCS Firearms Licensing Portal. To schedule an appointment email licenses@marbleheadma.gov. Due to the high number and fluctuation of appointment requests, you could be scheduled between 30-45 days out from your request.
*Please Note: For safety reasons, please do not bring weapons or ammunition into the Police Station. If you have old ammunition that you wish to turn in, please contact the Police Dispatch Center at (781) 631-1212 ext. 0, and an officer will respond to your home/business.
First-Time Applicants
For first-time applicants (people who have never held a MA firearms license or who’s license expired prior to the MA Gun Control Act of 1998), you will need the following items for your appointment:
- MA Driver’s License or U.S. Passport for Photo Identification.
- A copy of your MA approved Basic Firearms Safety Course. If you do not bring a copy of the certificate with you, we will not be able to proceed. The certificate and the instructor must be MA approved or it will not be valid. Because of state ethics laws, we are unable to recommend an instructor but you could find approved courses online with an internet search for MA Approved Basic Firearms Safety Courses.
- A check made payable to Town of Marblehead for $100. Please note, if you are applying for an FID-D Mace/Pepper Spray License, the fee is $25.
- Two pieces of mail with your name and a Marblehead residential address. Please note, post office boxes will not be accepted.
To expedite the process, please download a copy of the firearms application from the MA’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security website.
License Renewals
For renewal licenses, you will need the following items for your appointment:
- MA Firearms License that you wish to renew.
- Two pieces of mail with your name and Marblehead residential address to help verify you live here. Please note, post office boxes cannot be accepted.
- A check for $100 made payable to the Town of Marblehead. Please note, if you are 70 years of age or over, renewals are free. If you are 70 years of age or over and renewing an FID-D License for Mace/Pepper Spray, there is also no fee.
To expedite the process, please download a copy of the firearms application from the MA’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security website.
The appointment should last approximately thirty minutes. It takes roughly 1.5 months for the renewed license to arrive at Marblehead Police Headquarters from the state.
There is a 90-day grace period, which begins to run on the date the license is set to expire provided you have started the renewal process prior to expiration.
